Christmas on A Great Street: Orchard Road switches on, and the villages open
Orchard Road's Christmas on A Great Street switches on at Shaw House Urban Plaza on Tuesday 17 November 2026, in a ceremony officiated by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and 3.1 km of gold lights then run from Tanglin Road to Dhoby Ghaut until Sunday 3 January 2027. The Great Christmas Village opens in two halves, at Ngee Ann City from Friday 13 November and at Shaw House from Friday 20 November, and the season also brings the first Orchard Road Tourist Pass.
What you need to know, in short: Christmas on A Great Street is Orchard Road's Christmas season, organised by the Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA). The Community Chest Light-Up Ceremony is at Shaw House Urban Plaza on Tuesday 17 November 2026 from 7pm, officiated by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and co-organised with Community Chest. From that evening, 3.1 km of gold lights run from Tanglin Road to Dhoby Ghaut until Sunday 3 January 2027, under this year's theme, Season of Golden Joy. The Great Christmas Village, the carnival half of the season, opens earlier and in two parts: Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza from Friday 13 November, and Shaw House Urban Plaza from Friday 20 November, both running to 3 January.
The switch-on, and the hours after dark
The light-up is in its 43rd year, and Hitachi is its main sponsor for the 36th. The decorations are vine-inspired, with Christmas trees and mistletoe worked in three shades of gold along the whole stretch. Once switched on, the lights keep generous hours: 6.30pm to midnight from Sunday to Thursday, 6.30pm to 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, and 6.30pm right through to 6am on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. In other words, the road is lit for every evening of the season, and the two biggest nights of it run until breakfast.
Two villages, two opening dates
The Great Christmas Village is run by Kiztopia, and this year it spreads across two plazas with 50 carnival game booths, rides and game stations between them, 20 more booths than in 2025. The Ngee Ann City half, on Civic Plaza, opens first, from Friday 13 November to 3 January, 3pm to 10pm daily. It also carries two of the season's headline installations: Singapore's first LEGO Santa's Toy Factory, a hands-on workshop playground in front of the mall from 13 November to 22 December, and an Avengers: Doomsday themed Christmas tree, 13 metres tall with a life-size Doctor Doom, standing from Thursday 12 November. The Shaw House half, on Urban Plaza, follows a week later, from Friday 20 November to 3 January, also 3pm to 10pm. Above it, on the building's garden rooftop, sits the season's mascot piece: a glowing Christmas Merli, the Tourism Board's mascot in a Santa hat, 6.2 metres tall, in place from 17 November to 3 January.
Walking the golden 3.1 km
The natural way to take the season in is on foot, starting at the Tanglin end and walking east towards Dhoby Ghaut as the light fades. ORBA has placed five photo installations along the road, among them the Steps of Golden Joy outside Shaw House and Meet Me Under the Mistletoe outside Ngee Ann City. There is sound as well as light: festive instrumental music, Music in the Air, plays along the boulevard during the day, and the Hilton Singapore Orchard carries an outdoor projection show from 7pm to 10pm nightly, running from 1 November to 3 January. None of the street itself costs anything: the lights, the photo spots and the projection show are free, and you pay only inside the villages and the shops.
The first Orchard Road Tourist Pass
New this season, ORBA has launched the inaugural Orchard Road Tourist Pass. It offers visitors up to 20% off best available rates at five participating hotels, along with shopping and dining vouchers and Kiztopia Christmas carnival credits. It is ORBA's own product, sold on ORBA's terms, so check the participating hotels and the voucher conditions on the association's site before counting on the savings. The stay itself still needs booking in the ordinary way, and the season is a popular one: rooms along and around Orchard Road go early for the light-up weeks.
Christmas Eve, and planning the trip
The season's biggest single night is Thursday 24 December, when the Great Christmas Eve Street Party closes Orchard Road to traffic for live performances, a mascot parade, food trucks and the countdown to Christmas Day. If you are choosing one night to be on the road rather than beside it, that is the night. The full shape of the season sits on this site's November 2026 and December 2026 pages, and the Bay side of Christmas, the gardens, the trains and the markets, is covered in the Christmas Wonderland and the Bay guide. Orchard and the Bay pair well across two evenings: the street one night, the gardens the next. Visitors making a trip of it should sort the room early, as the same weeks carry the marathon, the stadium concerts and the countdown crowds.

One gap this guide fills, to end on: this site's Christmas coverage has run on the Bay until now, the gardens, the concert hall and the countdown over the water. Orchard Road is the city's original Christmas street, dressed every year since long before the Bay had a skyline, and it now has a guide of its own.
