Embark on adventurous journeys this June school holiday at Julia Gabriel Centre for Learning as children from Primary 1 to Primary 6 unleash their imagination and explore their creativity with a range of English EduDrama programmes.

Message in a Bottle – Primary 1 and 2

A castaway stranded on a desert island has thrown a message in a bottle into the open sea, hoping that someone, somewhere will find his desperate call for help. Join the JGCL Coastguard School and embark on a perilous rescue mission on the high seas to uncover the mystery of the message. Through literature, role-play and drama, students increase their ability to increase themselves confidently, while extending their imaginations and creativity into writing.

Week 1 (31 May – 4 June) 11.30am – 2.00pm, 2.30pm – 5.00pm

Week 2 (7 – 11 June) 9.00am – 11.30am, 2.30pm – 5.00pm

Week 3 (14 – 18 June 9.00am – 11.30am, 2.30pm – 5.00pm

Cost: S$385+GST per week (two-and-a-half hour sessions, Monday to Friday)

Making Soundwaves – Primary 3 and 4

Discover the excitement of radio in this five-day workshop where students will observe a radio DJ at work and even record their very own drama. With hands-on experience in scripting scenes for radio, crafting dramatic dialogue, and creative use of sound and music, students will breathe life into their own work and dramatise it for performance at a professional recording studio.

Week 3 (14 – 18 June 9.00am – 12.00pm, 2.00pm – 5.00pm

Cost: S$440+GST per week (three-hour sessions, Monday to Friday)

Shahrazad’s Stories – Primary 5 and 6

Step into the exotic and captivating world of The Arabian Nights and be intrigued by the story of King Sharayar and his new wife, Shahrazad. A fascinating literacy and performance journey, students will work as an ensemble from a published script and learn to construct story circles, while investigating the use of music, props and puppetry for performance. At the end of the five-day workshop, students will also get the chance to showcase their original work in front of an invited audience.

i-AM 2010: Reflection

Reflection promises an eye-opening experience, offering a look beyond the mirror to examine the true notions of identity as perceived by ourselves. The different elements of theatre, visual arts and music will come together in this one-night-only show taking place at the Sculpture Square: The Chapel. Set to a soundtrack of live music performed by local band Paris in the Making, Reflection aims not only to explore the theme of identity but also to encourage us to embrace individuality through examining our common insecurities. Come explore the various ‘live’ art installations depicting vignettes of the stereotypical complaints of today’s society, on issues ranging from weight and body image to financial troubles and interpersonal relationships, and discover the reflections of yourself in each of them.

Precious Little: Brief Encounters with Beckett

A man finds himself in the middle of a desert, mysteriously provided with tools that are taken away as soon as they become useful – how will he cope? Two men, one blind, the other lame, find each other in an abandoned landscape in the middle of winter. By helping each other, they just might make life a little more bearable. Given their options, and the tendencies of human nature, will it end in friendship or violence? These and other scenarios are the subject of World-in-Theatre’s Precious Little: Brief Encounters with Beckett.

Hailed as one of the most important writers of the 20th century, Samuel Beckett’s major works, such as Waiting for Godot and Endgame have been performed in theatres all over the world. However, his shorter works, though widely acclaimed, are performed far less frequently. Brief and intense, the plays throw the human condition into sharp relief and create a stripped down theatricality that asks a great deal from its actors.

The origin of the title comes from one of the last interviews Beckett gave before his death in 1989. When asked if he had found any part of his life’s journey worthwhile, he replied, “Precious little.”

World-in-Theatre’s Precious Little: Brief Encounters with Beckett, offers Singapore audiences a rare opportunity to familiarize themselves with some of these lesser-known works and to examine the world through the eyes of this Nobel prize -winning writer.
