Synopsis
Singapore will host the 11th Asia Full Contact Karate Championship 2008 this month.

Around 50 participants from 15 countries will pit their skills in Kyokushin Karate, the only full contact knock down style karate. They will compete in areas such as Tameshiwari (breaking objects) and Kumite (full contact fighting).

Members of the public and martial arts enthusiasts can look forward to a rare showcase of a highly disciplined and demanding martial art form and sport. It combines self-defence with qualities such as physical and mental cultivation.

The Master, Kancho Shokei Matsui, from Japan will grace the event in Singapore.

Inaugural Singapore Business Events Awards To Recognise Outstanding MICE Players

The Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau (SECB), a group of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), launched the Singapore Business Events Awards today (13 Apr 2007) to recognise the contributions of the business events industry players that have galvanised Singapore????s standing as a premier business travel and MICE destination.
The inaugural Awards ceremony will be held some time in early August 2007 and thereafter, it will be held annually.

The SECB, as the lead agency championing the interests of the business events industry which includes corporate meetings, incentive travel, conventions and exhibitions (MICE), has developed the Awards to profile Singapore as a leading destination for business events through showcasing the professionalism and skills of the business events industry.
The tourism industry contributes about three per cent to Singapore????s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Business Travel and MICE is identified as one of the key drivers of tourism in Singapore, with visitor arrivals constituting approximately 25 per cent of total visitor arrivals in 2005.

Tourism receipts (TR) garnered from BTMICE visitors in the same year accounts for over 30 per cent or more than SGD 3 billion of total tourism receipts.
With the growth potential of economies in the region, the Asia-Pacific is expected to attract over 100 million BTMICE visitors by 2015, up from 40 million in 2002, and the STB aims to substantially raise BTMICE contribution to at least 35 per cent, or SGD 10.5 billion of total TR by the year 2015.

In recent years, the Singapore MICE industry has proven its mettle by successfully staging high-profile events such as the World Economic Forum Asia Roundtable and the 117th Session of the International Olympic Committee in 2005 and the 2006 Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group in Sept 2006.

The Awards will recognise industry players that are innovative in organising business events and whose expertise and service levels meet global standards.

It comprises four categories:
- Event Excellence Awards,
- Suppliers Excellence Awards,
- Industry Achievement Award and the
- Individual Award category.

These categories are targeted at industry players ranging from Professional Conference Organisers (PCO), Professional Exhibition Organisers (PEO), Destination Management Companies (DMC), exhibition and convention venue operators, freight forwarders to other related companies such as stand contractors, AV, production and staging companies.
The award categories enable individuals as well as companies to be recognised. (For more information on the award categories, please refer to Annex A.)

Award-winners will gain industry-wide and international recognition for their outstanding achievements in the industry, providing them with the opportunity to showcase their expertise when bidding for or launching new events. As the Awards serve as a mark of distinction, it gives the award-winning company an edge over its competition.
